For those in search of a red-hot social scene, Beirut tops the list. The place to revel: Sky Bar (second picture; Minet al Hosn, +9611-955 555), newly relocated to the top of the BIEL Center, with panoramic views over the city, and still a favourite with locals and jetsetters alike.

When the throngs become overwhelming, guests at the new Four Seasons Beirut (first picture;; doubles from £258) can repair to their own private rooftop lounge at the hotel’s 26-storey pinnacle. The sumptuous interiors are by Pierre-Yves Rochon, the talent behind Four Seasons’ magnificent Palazzo della Gherardesca in Florence.
