In Marrakech the proliferation of riads may be abating – there are around 700 of these small, usually beautiful town houses – but the city is still top of the wish lists of many luxury hotel groups. Rocco Forte, Gordon Campbell Gray, Four Seasons, Banyan Tree and Park Hyatt all have designs on the city. Stealing a march on the competition, however, is La Mamounia (www.mamounia.com; doubles from £450), which closed in 2006 but is finally expected to reveal its new, reportedly glorious Jacques Garcia interiors on the 29th. Five minutes’ walk from the Djemaa el Fna, its location can’t be faulted and neither can its glorious mature gardens, which Sir Winston Churchill considered “the loveliest spot in the whole world”.
