The inherent paradox of the “global travel specialist” is being redressed by a rising trend, with the big boys hiring experts to lead highly focused group trips. Among them is Abercrombie & Kent (www.abercrombiekent.co.uk), which has just launched a series of new tours for 2012. They include a September trip to Japan (from £4,195 per person) exploring Kyoto’s geisha culture with Michael Jay, the only Westerner to hold a samurai rank since William Adams in 1600.
