The Southern Spirit (www.greatsouthernrail.com.au; from A$4,400, about £2,787, per person), a new train, is beginning its first complete season, which runs until June. The six-day route covers four states and 2,810km, from Adelaide or Melbourne to Brisbane (or vice versa), along Australia’s eastern seaboard. And in Sydney, The Darling (www.thedarling.com.au; from about £227) has just opened, a super-mod five-star hotel with more glass than brick, thus offering competitive views of Sydney Harbour Bridge.
