Overly cautious travellers are not quite yet visiting Kashmir, owing to India’s and Pakistan’s ongoing border conflict and the fallout from Bin Laden’s demise, but in July, domestic tourists flood Dal Lake and the beautiful city of Srinagar around it. These photo-snapping crowds should give international visitors confidence despite strong travel advisories. Testimony to rising interest can be found in the just-opened Vivanta by Taj (www.vivantabytaj.com; from £179); an 89-room, six-acre resort from which guests can explore the lake by punt-like shikara.
