Luxe at high altitude is to be found in the mountains of Yunnan Province in China, where the forward-thinking Songtsam Lodge group, founded by Tibetan Baima Dorjie, has opened three new properties: Songtsam Tacheng, Bezilan and Meili (; from £130 per person).

Each of the resorts is situated in a different village around the Three Rivers area. The brand is already known for its multiday treks – the Songtsam Circuit that China specialists are buzzing about – and these new lodges, with their handcrafted furniture and vibrant community engagement programmes, promise to enhance access to what many still dreamily refer to as Shangri-La.
