The Cape Town hotel that’s adored by our travel expert

Maria Shollenbarger

Maria Shollenbarger chooses her three favourite places in the world. Number three: Cape Town.

Cape Town is rife with intimate, super-chic guesthouses, from Les Cascades de Bantry Bay to Cape Cadogan and The Cape Heritage Hotel to the much-loved Kensington Place. But it’s a big five-star establishment to which I tend to direct friends for service that’s prescient, refined and generally delightful: Cape Grace (www.capegrace.com; from £407).

GM Nigel Pace is one of the most respected – and liked – men in the business, and his imprimatur is everywhere. Be greeted by name more or less from the minute you arrive; be ferried about (free of charge) by a fleet of BMW 750 Sedans whose drivers, if you get them chatting, all seem to know a lot about a lot: local fauna, the history of apartheid, the best places to eat Cape Malay cuisine. Be received with über-competence and easy smiles in equal measure, every time. The hotel’s 2008 makeover, lavish with Cape Dutch antiques, is simply the gorgeous icing on the cake.
