In Istanbul, Ian Schrager debuts the second hotel in his zany merger with Marriott. But The Istanbul Edition (www.editionhotels.com; from £281) is as far spiritually and aesthetically from its Waikiki sister property as it is geographically. All minimal, angular coolness, its rooms are panelled in soaped oak or Turkish rosewood and – nice bonus, this – are a minimum size of 420sq ft.

Factor in an outpost of the Cipriani family’s eponymous eatery, an Espa-managed spa, and a nightclub (strobes, red velvet ropes and all), and the city’s design-centric trendsetters will likely soon be claiming it as a local hotspot.
