London is the city to watch in October, and not just for Frieze (www.friezeartfair.com), the contemporary art fair that runs from the 14th to the 17th. Just off Leicester Square, Fergus Henderson is opening the St John Hotel (second picture; www.stjohnhotellondon.com; from £200). The 15 rooms are all lo-fi charm, with open white-tiled bathrooms and wood-panelled walls; the restaurant and bar will stay open till 2am.

And the 10th sees the much-anticipated reopening of The Savoy (first picture; www.the-savoy.com; from £350). Nostalgists will laud the reinstatement of The Savoy Grill, still under the aegis of Gordon Ramsay; all comers will rate the rooftop pool (one of a handful in town). The first guests are well situated to enjoy the 54th Annual London Film Festival (www.bfi.org.uk/lff), which starts on the 13th.
