In the Mediterranean, the charms of Formentera – at 12 miles end to end, the tiniest of the Balearic islands, and arguably also the most authentic – are on full display at Gecko Beach Club (www.geckobeachclub.com; doubles from €245), which has been given a laudable upgrade. It now boasts 28 airy new rooms overlooking the sea and a remade beach club, complete with open-air restaurant (think seafood a la plancha under a billowing white marquis) and serviced white-sand beach.
