That glamorous Venice institution the Cipriani now finds itself in stiff competition with lesser-known private houses that are becoming available to rent. For this year’s Biennale (www.labiennale.org), which opens on Saturday June 1, consider booking Palazzetto di San Pietro (www.uniquepropertiesandevents.com; from €12,000 per week, sleeps 16; master bedroom pictured) located between the city’s two major exhibition centres in the Giardini della Biennale and the Arsenale. Depicted by Canaletto, San Pietro is a four-floor palace with a gym, pool, hot tub and 1,000sq ft garden.
