Capri’s charms are myriad and much-sung – but can be lost amid the throngs of day trippers who trammel its quaint piazze and fill its narrow beaches like so many sardines lining tin cans. The way to experience it, therefore, is from the privacy and comfort of one of the island’s handful of well-located hotels with both luxurious appointments and genuine character.

Among these, Punta Tragara (; from €342) has long been a favourite, not least for its eyrie-like location at the end of the Via Tragara (first picture), far above Marina Piccola with views over the Faraglioni. Now, after a multimillion-pound renovation under the aegis of owners the Counts Goffredo and Leonardo Manfredi, the hotel has just re-opened with a spare but very elegant new face. White linens and tile and terrazzo floors impart that mezzogiorno airiness, while black-lacquered furnishings and brightly-hued details (richly tufted settees and heavy damask throws shot through with metallic threading) add opulence.

None of the 43 rooms is the same, almost all have terraces that give onto any number of sea, forest, and bay vistas, while the penthouse has a vast square private patio atop its roof with 360-degree views (second picture). Two seawater swimming pools allow each guest his or her own space and sunbathing opportunity. The restaurant, Monzù (third picture), is positioned at the edge of a steep precipice (a thin sheet of glass is all that separates you from the glorious sunset over the Marina), serving haute interpretations of classic Campanian dishes, over which one can ponder one’s good fortune at having secured a truly tranquil, stylish, and – best of all – private corner of this most storied destination.
