To celebrate the 100th anniversary of London’s iconic Michelin House on the Fulham Road, its current owner-occupiers – Sir Terence Conran and Bibendum restaurant – have teamed up with the Royal College of Art to commission a limited-edition poster marking the occasion.

MA students from the RCA’s Communication, Art & Design department were invited to submit a design for a commemorative poster to hang in Bibendum restaurant alongside its renowned collection of original Michelin tyre advertising posters. And the winning design will be available at The Conran Shop in a very limited edition of 10 for just one month from January 17. As framed posters cost £250 and the unframed just £85, they are likely to go fast.

Three grandees from the design world – Michael Wolff, Stephen Bayley and Sir Terence Conran – took up residence in Bibendum Oyster Bar to judge the shortlist of 13 design proposals. They unanimously selected a poster by 24-year-old first-year student Marta Dlugolecka, who received a £1,000 prize for her playful Bowler Hat design (pictured). “I wanted to capture the quirkiness of the building in my poster while giving it a real feeling of energy and celebration,” she said.

“I love Marta’s poster and it will sit perfectly alongside the other stunning Michelin posters we have in Bibendum,” says Sir Terence. “She has managed to capture the charm, fun and wit that to me is everything Michelin and our beautiful building stand for. It is simple and gets straight to the point – which is not as easy as it looks.

“The quality of the posters submitted was outstanding and demonstrates precisely why we should be nurturing and promoting our young talent, not stifling it,” he adds. “The creativity and innovation of our young designers and artists make a huge and important contribution to the economy – and future – of this country.”

The limited-edition RCA winning Michelin poster is available to purchase in store from January 17. It will be available either framed in a simple black ash frame (three pieces, £250 each), or unframed (seven pieces, £85 each).

There will also be a selection of six reproduction Michelin posters selected by Sir Terence Conran which will be available from January 17 for sale throughout the year. All images will be available in small size (50.8cm x 71cm), £99 each. Two images will be available in large size (100cm x 140cm), £250 each. All posters will be printed on 100 per cent cotton canvas.
